The Child Dental Benefits Schedule will continue in 2017
In the news:
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) has applauded announcement by the Turnbull Government and its Health Minister, Greg Hunt, to reinstate the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) cap to $1,000.
Secure your children’s optimal oral health care by taking advantage of the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, formerly known as the Medicare Teen Dental Plan. The new plan was implemented in January 2014, which provides financial support for basic dental health care services to children of eligible families.
Your trusted dental practice in Melbourne here at Q1 Dental bulk bills almost every dental treatment that is eligible under this exciting new plan. This means there is no additional cost to you. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule provides your child with up to $1,000 worth of dental treatments over two years. With CBDS, the scope of treatment has expanded as compared to the former Medicare plan, which was limited to $167 of treatment cost per voucher.
Who is Eligible for the CDBS?
The Department of Human Services evaluates the eligibility of your child at the beginning of each calendar year and sends notification to the child or the caregiver of the child. Children between the ages of 2 and 17 and whose families receive a relevant Family Tax Benefit Part A at any period in the calendar year are eligible. Eligibility is assessed from the beginning of the year for each calendar year.
If you are not sure about your child’s eligibility, you may reach Medicare at 132011 or visit the website of Department of Human Services. To check or update your details for CDBS, the Australian Government has advised that eligible families must ensure their details by contacting agencies such as Medicare, Centrelink on 136 150 or Department of Veterans’ Affairs on 133 254.
What Dental Treatments Are Covered?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers a range of treatments, which includes the following:
- Comprehensive dental check-ups & examinations
- Scale/ Dental Cleans/ Fluoride treatment
- Dental x-rays
- Tooth Fillings
- Dental fissure sealants
- Root canal therapy

It should be noted that CDBS does not cover orthodontics and cosmetic dental procedures; and cannot be used to pay for any services conducted in the hospital.
