Dental crowns act like “caps” for your teeth. They cover the entire part of an affected tooth above the gum line. The crown encases the tooth and becomes the new outer surface.
Dental crowns can be all metal, all ceramic, all resin, or porcelain fused to metal. If the tooth that requires repair is located at the back of the mouth, a crown made of gold may be recommended.
Uses of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are have multiple applications:
- Broken or decayed teeth that can’t be fixed or restored by filling
- Cover a tooth where most of the top portion had to be sculpted
- Repair flawed filling
- Improve the appearance of teeth
- Restore root canal treated teeth
The Procedure
Generally, installing a dental crown is done in two dental appointments.
During the first visit, the dentist will remove the decay and make an impression of your teeth, which will be used to create a mould for the fabrication of a dental crown.
The mould will be sent to the dental laboratory, where the dental crown will be fabricated. While the permanent crown is being made at the lab a temporary crown, installed by your dentist, will be in place to cover the tooth.
On the second visit, the temporary crown will be removed to install the permanent one. The crown is cemented to the damaged tooth. The dentist may also need to reshape or polish the crown if necessary.
